I made this photograph in the course of A year in Torridon, a photographic project I undertook from mid-2022 to mid-2023. I had walked past this dead tree on previous, unsuccessful attempts to shoot a scene from a location higher up the hillside on Beinn Eighe. On this particular evening, the weather gods were finally on my side; enough of the western sky remained clear for the sun’s last rays to work their magic and I managed to create the image that had eluded me on previous occasions.
As I descended in the afterglow (of sunset and success), I was struck by the clarity of the last light, and the contrast between the ghostly pale tones of this fabulous Scots pine skeleton and the rich red tones of the living trees behind.
While both images I made that evening were successful, it is this unplanned one that I prefer.
