This mountain dominates the entrance to the fjord at Reine in Lofoten, Norway. Imposing at any time, but all the more so in the conditions I encountered in late winter. The light covering of snow and ice enhanced the three-dimensional form of the bare rock, while light fog has helped to increase separation of the main subject from the distant peaks.
Although I can’t claim to have seen it at the time of shooting (or to be a Harry Potter fan, for that matter), I was struck on reviewing this image afterwards by the mountain’s passing resemblance to the magical Sorting Hat at Hogwarts. Now, I can’t unsee it!
This image won first prize for me in Outdoor Photography’s ‘mountain photography’ competition earlier this year (OP 307).
