The island of Værøya (or Vaeroy) lies to the west of the main Lofoten archipelago, in arctic Norway, accessible only by ship. I visited in late winter, making a number of wet beach landings by Zodiac to explore the shoreline. Set back a short distance from the beach, I found a sizeable cave, from which roof hung numerous metres-long icicles, threatening like giant glass swords.
On one of its walls hung this spectacular icy cascade, softly lit by the reflected light entering the cave. As I made this photograph, I was very conscious of the natural hazards that we encounter in pursuit of landscape photography, in this case the deadly chandeliers overhead.
