Lightly Fallen
Limited Edition of 20
Location: Glen Affric, Scotland
This birch tree has reached the end of its life, yet seems to have fallen down ever so gently and to float gracefully above the woodland floor. When exploring in woodland, I enjoy seeking out such characterful trees, both dead and alive, and solving the compositional challenges that they present the photographer. In this instance, I find the relationship between the foreground birch and the Scots pine trunk behind to be critical, providing balance to the image. The textural and colour contrast between the delicate lichen that hangs from several of the trees and the bracken understory are also key to the image's cohesion and appeal to me, making this a photograph that I enjoy returning to.
