Blue Aspen
Open Edition
Location: Colorado, USA
One could be forgiven for assuming that a liberal helping of Photoshop has been employed to achieve the the colour grading in this image, but not so - it's not my style! Instead, it is the result of a fortuitous alignment of our star with the local topography. The sun is low in the sky in front of me, but the background trees have been thrown into shade by higher land behind and are, therefore, lit only by cool light reflected from the sky. Meanwhile, much warmer evening sunlight is reflecting off the landscape behind me, illuminating the aspen tree trunks in the foreground of the image. Once the colour temperature is set to render the aspen trunks a 'correct', neutral white, the contrasting qualities of the two light sources become more apparent. Quite a lot of science to produce an artistic effect!
